method with SMS" * Mr. Kohei Nagai
Division of Built Environment, GraduateSchool of Engineering, Hokkaido
University
(Currently, located at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich as
a overseas fellow of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science)
A 3D analysis system was developed by using discrete analysis method that
is suited for simulating failure process of concrete material. By integrating
SMS, the resulting system eliminated need of detailed knowledge in matrix
solution methods to perform analyses and it can run on desktop personal
computers.

"The application of CFD in rocket development" * Dr. Nobuhiro Yamanishi
Space Systems Evaluation Engineering Group, Institute of Space Technology
and Aeronautics, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency
The basic design of the H-IIA rocket was initiated in the early 1990's,
when CFD was not actively used as a design tool for rocket launchers.
Today, CFD has spread from the academia to the industry, as it is now
used widely as a design tool for many applications. In this special session,
examples of CFD in recent years on the design of Japanese rocket launcherswill
be discussed.

"POSTMILL- an analysis result DB system with visualization function" * Mr. Kazuhisa Katchi, ZEXEL Valeo
Climate Control Corp.
In order to respond to frequent and time-critical demand for development
of automotive HVAC systems, designers at ZEXEL Valeo Climate Control use
CFD systems. In addition, they have recently developed and started using
a supplemental system called "POSTMILL", in corporation with VINAS, which
takes care of data management and visualization needs.

"Improving CFD prediction accuracy for industrial turbomachinery applications
by introducing transition modeling" Mr. Thomas Hildebrandt, NUMECA
Ingenieur Buro
Modern CFD solvers and procedures are generally accepted as a standard
design tool. However, one major effect is typically omitted in daily CFD
turbomachinery design work: The laminar-turbulent transitional behaviour
of the boundary layers.
This effect is usually not taken into account due to the lack of this feature
in many of the CFD codes in use today. As a consequence most industrial
calculations are carried out in fully turbulent, even in applications,
which are largely dominated by laminar flow. This simplification can lead
to serious discrepancies in particular for low speed compressors and low
pressure turbines operating at low Reynolds numbers. This paper describes
the steady and unsteady flow simulation of a 1,5-stage low speed research
compressor, applying the transition model proposed by Abu-Ghannam and Shaw.
Extensive measurements both in steady and unsteady mode. The numerical
results are examined and discussed in comparison with experimental data.
Activating transition in the steady state calculations is largely improving
the accuracy of the global performance predictions along the entire compressor
working line, validated by comparison with experimental data.
"The
future of industrial applications for turbomachinery with new
generation of CFD technology, including non reflecting mixing
planes, transition and non linear harmonic rotor/stator interaction" Dr. Marius Swoboda, Rolls-Royce
GmbH
Modern CFD solvers and procedures are well advanced and
established in the industrial field of multistage turbomachinery
design. However, the interfaces between rotating and steady rows
are usually treated as Mixing Planes where flow variables are circumferentially
averaged and passed to the neighbouring row. This paper describes
the validation of advanced approaches which will be used in future
turbomachinery design: non reflecting mixing planes non linear
harmonic rotor/stator interaction calculation of a multistage machine
with modeling of transition effects.
