Since 2014, Formula 1 cars are propelled by a new Hybrid turbocharged V6 Engine for which the efficiency of each subsystem is at the heart of the performance. The turbocharger being a key component, Renault Sport has taken advantage of ADT’s TURBOdesign Suite based on 3D inverse design to significantly improve their compressor. |

Sculptor® is an engineering tool that easily and smoothly deforms (morphs) CAE meshes and CAD geometry. When coupled with optimization algorithms and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and/or Finite Element (FEA) this powerful capability can perform automatic shape optimization. Sculptor is based on Optimal Solutions' powerful Arbitrary Shape Deformation (ASD) technology that provides smooth, accurate, volumetric shape deformations, based on movements of user defined control points, using very few design variables. Sculptor helps find the subtle shape changes that produce large improvements in design performance. Models become clay in your hands. It is used in many fields such as motorsports, automotive, aerospace, bio-medical, turbomachinery, marine, shape matching, etc. Sculptor comes bundled with optimization algorithms in it Optimization Control Center or can be used in Batchmode with other optimization software. Sculptor has been coupled with most commercial, open source, and government engineering CFD/FEA software formats and most neutral CAD formats. A case study is presented using a Pointwise generated OpenFOAM mesh of the DrivAer car model (Institute of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at the Technische Universität München). Pointwise produces high quality meshes that Sculptor can morph while maintaining high quality cells even with large deformations. The surface boundary layer thickness and orthogonality is maintained.

A design shape optimization was performed on a turbo fan for packaged air-conditioning indoor unit by using SCULPTOR. Fan input at a constant air flow condition was set as an objective function, and a response surface was created by DOE, and then an optimal blade shape was determined by a gradient method.

As the international shipping industry is required to comply with stricter regulations on CO2 emissions and noise levels on board ships, we are developing ships which are energy efficient and friendly to seafarers. To that end, we have developed a propeller design optimization system by linking DAKOTA and OpenFOAM, both of which are open source programs.

In order to cope with increasing amount of data in large scale calculations performed by super computers or cloud computing systems, application of bit division technique is considered, in which bit division is performed with a precision suitable for operational purposes based on bit level characteristics of floating decimal point data.

Based on OpenFOAM, a multi-phase flow solver is developed for studies of slug flow induced pipeline vibration, which is one of major challenges in design of pipelines in petrochemical plants. By using this solver, a slug flow was simulated and its vibration force was predicted in a HPC computer. The predictions matched well with experiment results.
